Responsible Use

After an assignment I did in class last week I realized what impact I have on the worlds water. It was called my water footprint. I just visited the website of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and read under a section called Water & Wastewater Pricing. Something interesting was that 100 years ago United States Americans were using an average of 10 gallons of water a day. Today the average water use for Americans are 100 gallons of water a day. Another statistic that they presented was that of all the developed countries, Americans pay the least amount for water relative to income. Of course the price of water will increase as the supply of water becomes more scarce.

I think that the reason why Americans use so much water is because it is so readily available at such a low cost. It makes it much easier for someone to leave the tap running while they brush their teeth or to take longer showers. I think that as the information spreads and more people learn about the importance of water then everyone will become much more responsible. By doing so we are not only helping ourselves and future generations, but we are also helping the other people around the world who have to suffer from the shortage of water.
